Doctor Dorit Samocha-Bonet

After completing a BSc degree in Nutritional Sciences at the Hebrew University (Israel), Dorit joined the Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Tel Aviv Medical Centre as a clinical dietician and while working as a dietician, Dorit completed a Master degree in Clinical Biochemistry at Tel Aviv University (Israel). As a clinical dietician, Dorit came to terms with the fact that only a minority of her patients could maintain a reduced healthy weight in the long term and she decided to turn to research into obesity and metabolic disease. After completing a PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology at Tel Aviv University (Israel, 2006), she relocated to Sydney where she took a postdoctoral position at the Diabetes & Metabolism Division at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research (2007). In 2011 she was awarded the Skip Martin Early Career Fellowship from the Australian Diabetes Society and in 2013 she established the Clinical Insulin Resistance group.

Dorit’s research is focused on the diverse phenotypes of obesity in human, and on uncovering the underlying factors involved in the failure to improve glycaemia in response to common diabetes medications and caloric restriction in some individuals with prediabetes.
