ANZOS OSSANZ AOCO 2017

Pre-Post Conference Workshops

Nursing Education Seminar on metabolic/bariatric nursing (Pre Conference)

Date: Tuesday 3 October
Time: 9:00am - 3:00pm
Location: Function Room, Gallery of South Australia (see map below)

Morning Tea and Lunch Provided

There is currently no education or professional development in metabolic/bariatric surgical nursing in Australia or New Zealand. This seminar aims to address this gap and will have a nursing focus specifically on the care of patients who are considering or have decided to undergo a metabolic surgical procedure to treat severe obesity. It will additionally cover aspects of this surgical treatment for those nurses already involved in the care of this patient cohort, whether this is short term or long term after-care. This will be the only pre-conference educational event held by OSSANZ.

For delegates attending the conference you can select to attend a workshop as an add-on during the registration process, or by logging back on to your registration profile as a returning delegate. Not going to the conference but wanting to attend this workshop? See below for costs and then click here to arrange.

The content will cover:

  • An overview of surgical interventions utilised to treat severe obesity.
  • What nurses need to know about signs & symptoms that indicate a deteriorating patient.
  • What are the early complications; 90-day post-surgery complications; late complications
  • What are the mechanisms that alter the course of T2DM after surgical interventions?
  • What do we teach patients about the procedure they will/or have undergone?
  • When should surgery be offered to diabetic patients?
  • How should nurses manage diabetic patients pre-and post-surgery?
  • How should nurses explain surgery to our patients/educate them, given the different mechanisms involved?
  • Should we expect that all or most patients will regain weight?
  • What can we do as nurses to support those who do gain weight? Pharmacology? Dietary restriction? Support groups?

Who should attend?
This seminar is particularly relevant to nurses working as specialists in this area of practice, and to nurses who are relatively new to this area of practice.
In particular:

  • Nurses who care for patients with severe obesity who will, or have, undergone metabolic surgery
  • Peri-operative nurses involved in metabolic surgery
  • Nurses who work in a surgical unit/ward
  • Nurses who work in a private surgical practice
  • Mental health nurses who have an interest in obesity and the surgical treatment of obesity
  • Nurses working in the private sector or public sector
